Helping Focus - Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj
'Jagrit' is an ongoing programme of the DPS Society with the objective to spread awareness not only to the urban youth but also to the marginalized sections of society. The programme started with an HIV/AIDS Awareness Camp in April 2004, Where 300 students & teachers were trained as Peer Educators and Teacher Facilitators from all DPS schools across the country as well as Kendriya Vidyalayas (Govt. Schools) from Delhi. Their mission was to rid this country of HIV virus that is spreading rapidly, especially among the youth.
Mr. R.S Mani, from the Ministry of IT conducted a workshop informing the students of what to be wary of while surfing the internet and also shared various tips for safety and privacy of the individual in cyberspace.
Our students attended workshops and seminar on adolescent issues organised by NIE – the Times of India (The leading newspaper) where resource person Ms. Vandana talked about issues of ideal self-deportment, criticism, bullying, self –esteem. she used role play method and encouraged students to adopt a smart, positive attitude and use the tools of rationalisation. debate and negotiation, rather than settle for confrontation.
Ms Punita Kothiala, school counsellor, conducted a workshop on ‘Awareness against bullying’ for students various ways to counter bullying were discussed with students in an interactive session.
An Anti-Smoking workshop was conducted for students. The guest speaker, Dr. Sunita Gupta, Professor and Head of Oral Medicine and Radiology at Maulana Azad Institute spoke about harmful effects of tobacco.
Self-defence camp was organised for girls where Female Delhi Police personnel who trained girls in basic self-defence techniques.
Workshop on learning disabilities is attended by Teacher and students to sensitise them and raise awareness about mental health.
As a part of social responsibility initiative:
- Students of DPS Vasant Kunj, participated in the “You read they Learn” Campaign started by a Hindustan Times and donated around 2000 books to help underprivileged children enjoy the pleasure of reading
- Students also took part in “Kids for tiger” Programme organised by Aircel Company to save tigers.
- Environment Club: It was established with an intention to keep the environment clean and clear. Volunteers participate in several activities such as waste management, tree plantation, and workshops for air monitoring, anti-cracker campaigns and many more.
- Visiting old age home
- Facebook page "Feed A Kid" to promote sharing among people
- Vidhur Relan, a student of out school, helped 200 illiterate maids in opening bank accounts
- Students joined Community Led Environment Action Network - CLEAN-India Programme. CLEAN-India Students decided to encourage communities to join in their greening programme. This was followed by ascertaining the requirement of tree-planting in their neighbourhood communities with the help of the local residents.
