Bullying in schools has become a greater problem in schools throughout the years. Bullying causes students to not feel safe while at school. This is an issue experienced by students in schools in multiple countries. Contrary to popular belief, bullying occurs mostly in school. Once thought to be simple child behavior has escalated over the years to create a real problem that needs addressing.

After different studies, bullying is now known to have many different long term effects. With reports that in two-thirds of the recent school shootings, the attackers had previously been bullied, awareness of this problem has and continues to grow. International research shows that bullying occurs in all grade levels from elementary schools to high schools.

Dan Olweus, a researcher in Norway conducted research in the 1970s exposing the widespread effects of bullying. Bullying is common in not only the Unites States, but also countries such as Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Research from some of these countries suggests that without intervention, bullies are more likely to develop a criminal record than their peers. Also, victims tend to suffer from multiple psychological harm, even after the bullying has stopped.

Bullying could affect a student’s sense of safety within the school. One of the best ways to address bullying is to stop it before it starts, therefore, school staff must help make schools safer and prevent bullying.

One of the best ways to decrease violence in schools is for the faculty and school administrators to commit to this intensive effort.

There are many websites and sources aimed at assisting students at gaining the confidence to to deal with the issue instead of just letting it happen. These resources can also help schools develop the knowledge on how to deal with the issue as well.
