Sports - About Us

Athletics play an important role in the everyday lives of high school students throughout the world. Because of this, our group chose sports and competition as our sub topic. All members of our group participate in sports such as soccer, football, basketball, baseball, track & field, and hockey. It is said that students who participate in extracurricular activities perform better in school because it not only helps them manage their time but also helps keep them passing in school. The sub-topics in which were chosen to be look closely at were Time Management, Drug Use, Sports Hazing, Favoritism, Gender Equality, and Music in Sports, and Tryouts & Eligibility.

All of these issues relate closely back to sports and competition. Time management is essential for any prep athlete to possess because it allows them to not only participate in a sport, but also achieve good grades by using their limited free time wisely. The use of drugs in high school athletics is very common, but very bad; therefore, by playing a sport, it is essential that the athlete avoids these harmful substances and plays fair. Along with that, hazing in athletics seems to be part of all high schools and is easily related to sports and competition. Coaches like to follow the rules about recruiting at tryouts but when it comes down to it they just end up picking who they think is the best player to be on their team. In many competitions, gender equality is a problem. Coaches often favor a player merely because of his or her gender not ability. Music plays a very important role in high school sports because it is a way for athletes to get pumped up right before a big game or competition. Finally, tryouts & eligibility is a way for coaches to pick their best players and this also keeps students doing well in school because the school does not allow the participation in sports with bad grades.

Since our group is full of athletes, the subject of sports and competition seemed very interesting and exciting to learn about. Drug and steroid use was a very fascinating issue to study because it is so common in many high schools. Time management was also very relatable to our group because every one of us has to be very good at this to participate in a sport and do well in school. Also, hazing, gender equality, and favoritism are topics that many of us have experienced which made writing about them very simple. Lastly, music and tryouts are both things that every high school athlete uses and experiences in their career. In conclusion, sports and competition is important to all high school athletes, including ourselves, because they teach many life lessons and help us grow into to better more rounded human beings.
