A huge problem with social media is privacy issues. On Social Media websites you are encouraged to leak personal information such as where you live or go to school. The idea behind this is to have people you know find you but it can also serve as a way for predators to find you, too. Anyone can see anything online and nothing from the internet can not actually be deleted. Instead, all of the personal information posted by any of the 1.4 billion + FaceBook users can be viewed by any person at any time. Identity Theft is an added threat correlated with Social Media. Because of this, people have to be careful about what they post because if they aren’t they are threatening themselves to online predators and even identity theft. As if this isn’t bad enough, future employers can also view Social Media accounts which can very easily not be in the employee’s favor.

Social Media has also created problems among our common youth. There have been numerous studies that have verified that a side-effect of Social Media is having feelings of depression, narcissism, and envy. As the website time.com concluded: “German researchers found that spending time on Facebook created feelings of loneliness, misery and envy among a third of the 600 people they studied.” Viewing profiles can make a person self obsessed and extremely narcissistic. There is also a study that said that using Social Media can decrease motivation level.

The well-being of our generation is being jeopardized by our obsession with how we look online and what we see on our news feed. Not only are websites like FaceBook and Twitter killer time-wasters but they can also have a deep impact on how we view ourselves and our peers.
